Anthony Montreal McClain

A suspect identified in a Fremont drug investigation dating back to Jan. 23 is in jail today under a $755,000 secured bond.

Anthony Montreal McClain, 26, 352 Pinkney Church Road, was charged with trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a vehicle for the use or sale of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Fremont Police Chief Paul Moates said McClain was the subject of an investigation that started with a car parked on someone else's property in Fremont.

"We had reports the vehicle was being used to store drugs," he said.

The car, parked on Martin Street, was towed at the request of the property owner, and Fremont police accompanied the vehicle to the towing company and stayed with it while a search warrant was obtained, Moates said.

"When we opened the trunk, we recovered over 30 grams of cocaine and over 103 grams of marijuana packaged for sale," he said.

A stolen firearm was also recovered.

During the ongoing investigation, evidence tying McClain to the vehicle was obtained.

"As of last week we presented the details of our investigation to the district attorney and a warrant was obtained for (McClain's) arrest," Moates said.

Moates said that McClain, also known to the Fremont Police Department as "Fred," sometimes resided in the 200 block of Branch Street.

Officers responding to a disturbance in that same area Sunday just after 1 a.m. identified McClain and arrested him.

Moates said McClain has a lengthy history of drug activity and convictions, and his office is "very satisfied" with having taken him off the streets.
