Voting for 'Idol' hopeful starts Tuesday

When she was a senior at Eastern Wayne High School in 2010, Majesty York's superlative in the yearbook probably seemed like a lofty aspiration -- "Next American Idol."
The chance to move her closer to that dream comes Tuesday night, when "American Idol" begins its live shows and the 21-year-old performs as part of the Top 15 females in the show's Top 30. Voting begins immediately after the show.
This week will actually be make-or-break time for the fledgling singer, as the show's usual two-night format expands to three, with the Top 30 quickly winnowed down to the Top 13.
That means the public vote is critical, as fan favorites have been known to be sent home prematurely simply because audience members presumed calls were coming in to secure their favorite's fate.
The show airs on Fox TV from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday. Information on how to vote by phone, text or online will be given during the show's broadcast.
The same will happen Wednesday with the Top 15 male singers. Results from the two nights of voting will air Thursday night. The Top 13 will move forward in the competition, with live shows starting Wednesday, Feb. 26, and the first finalist from that group sent home the following evening.
Longtime viewers need to be aware of a new wrinkle this year -- the days of unlimited voting for your favorites are past.
According to the show's website, voting will now be limited to 50 votes per method, either calls or texts per phone number. Online viewers can also send in 50 votes per contestant, directly from AmericanIdol.com, Facebook or the American Idol app. Combining any variation of online votes is still limited to a total of 50 votes per person.
At least one local viewing party is being planned, The News-Argus learned this morning. A gathering is planned at Logan's on Tuesday night, and the public is invited.
Larry Dawson from AAR said employees there are hosting the event and plan to show up shortly before 8 p.m., when the broadcast featuring Majesty debuts. He said there is no charge and those attending will go Dutch off the restaurant menu.
