Raymond Smith Jr., transportation director for Wayne County Public Schools, was recently installed as national president of Dillard/Goldsboro Alumni & Friends, Inc. and a reception is planned to recognize him locally this weekend.

Janet Barnes, chairperson of the national presidential reception, said the public is invited to attend the dinner/dance. It will be held Saturday at 7 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 and the dance from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. at H.V. Brown Hall on Poplar Street. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased from any alumni member or at the door.

Smith, elected to a three-year term, is the first Goldsboro High School graduate chosen to lead the organization, Ms. Barnes said. Previous presidents have been graduates of Dillard.

The 1979 GHS graduate is carrying on the legacy of his parents in being active in the alumni organization formed in 1956 and expanding to six chapters -- Goldsboro, Atlanta, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

His father, the late Raymond Smith Sr., was the group's third national president, serving as interim from 1997-98 and then elected to the office in 1998. He was in his third term when he passed away in 2006. Smith Jr.'s mother, Thelma Smith, a member of the Wayne County Board of Education, previously served as national scholarship chairman.
