A 16-year-old Southern Wayne High School student has been charged with making a false report of a weapon of mass destruction on educational property.

Junior Josue Mejia, of 107 Jake Drive, Dudley, allegedly scribbled a bomb threat on a bathroom wall at the school Tuesday, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.

Mejia admitted to writing the threat after school officials identified him from security footage, investigators said.

The student, due in Wayne County District Court today for a first appearance, is being held under a $500 unsecured bond.

He is the second student in Wayne County to be charged under the new statute, enacted in response to the mass shootings at schools across the country in recent history, the sheriff's office said.

A Charles B. Aycock High School student, Barndon Mcmahon, 16, is still going through the judicial process after he was similarly charged when he threatened to shoot students coming off the school bus on Aug. 27.
