FREMONT -- Kerry McDuffie is leaving his position as town administrator of Fremont next month to become the town manager in Southport.

McDuffie's last day will be Nov. 8. He will begin work in Southport Nov. 11.

"I'm very excited about Southport, but I have been in Fremont for nine-and-a-half years and you get attached," McDuffie said. "It's never a great time to leave because of all of the projects here."

McDuffie beat out 117 other candidates for the job, which opened up over the summer.

"I've started getting things in order here. It is generally accepted in the field of town administrators and managers to give 30 days notice when leaving a job. I've started looking for a house in Southport," McDuffie said.

The town board of Southport voted unanimously to hire McDuffie as the new town manager at a meeting Tuesday night.

"I feel extremely proud to be chosen," he said.

Mayor Robert Howard of Southport said that he is very excited to have McDuffie come aboard as the town's new manager and is looking forward to working with him.

The Fremont town board will discuss what to do about McDuffie's absence at the next board meeting Oct. 15, Mayor W. Darron Flowers said.

"He is leaving for a better opportunity at Southport, and we wish him the best of luck with his new position," Flowers said.
