Five seventh-grade students from Wayne County Public Schools have been named to the Duke Talent Identification Program, or TIP.

The students were among 75,000 middle school students across 16 states who took the SAT earlier in the school year. After scores were tallied, their results put them in the top 25 percent of the talent search pool.

Officials said they were eligible to participate in Duke TIP because they scored in the 95th percentile on the national norms of the approved standardized achievement, aptitude or mental ability tests while in elementary or middle school.

The Duke TIP program identifies academically gifted students across 16 states. Since 1980, it has been a leader in providing innovative programs to support the development of optimal student potential.

This year's students to earn the status represented two area middle schools:

* Greenwood: Yoseph Yan

* Norwayne: Elizabeth Barker, Paola Cortes, Gage Freeman and William Holland.
