Bookoo, an online marketplace that helps neighbors buy and sell goods, awarded a $1,000 Stars & Stripes scholarship to local resident Elizabeth Ramos, 27.
The scholarship was open to active duty service members and their spouses who were pursuing higher education and living in the Goldsboro, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base community. Ramos, who is married to a senior airman with the U.S. Air Force based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, plans to use the $1,000 scholarship as part of her ongoing education at Wayne Community College where she is studying dental assisting.
Bookoo scholarships have helped the Bookoo team personally gain momentum for a college education, and the company decided it wanted to help others do the same. The website, which started in 2004, grew rapidly because of word-of-mouth, especially thanks to military families. Returning the support these families have shown to Bookoo, the company launched the scholarship program and is also donating $5,000 to Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of service members and Wounded Warriors.
