Work should begin before the end of the month on highway resurfacing projects on N.C. 55 and U.S. 70.

The state Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.3 million contract to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson for resurfacing of 10.6 miles of highway.

The following sections of road will be resurfaced:

* U.S. 70 east of Goldsboro from Beston Road to the Lenoir County line

* U.S. 70 west from Lake Wackena Road to Casey Chapel Church Road

* N.C. 55 from U.S. 117 Alternate in Mount Olive east to N.C. 403.

The roads will remain to traffic, with flagmen directing motorists through the construction sites when lanes are closed. Work can begin as early as Nov. 26, with final completion scheduled for no later than Aug. 1, 2013.

DOT officials reminded motorists to watch signs for construction information, to stay alert, and to obey the posted speed limit.

The Wayne County contract was one of 15 totaling $73.6 million awarded in October for highway and bridge projects across the state. The DOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects came in about 9.1 percent, or $7.4 million, below the DOT estimates.
