Members of the Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission got their first look last week at the components that will make up the city's parks master plan as consultants with the state's Recreation Resources Service revealed a preliminary draft of the plan based on data gathered from community meetings.

Steve Moler and Pete Armstrong were on hand to guide the commission, which is also acting as the master plan steering committee, through the presentation, which showed recommendations regarding existing facilities and an assessment of projected needs in the future.

The suggestions presented were based on more than a half dozen meetings with citizens over the summer.

Members of the public said they wanted a higher level of maintenance at the city's parks, including more landscape work to include flowers, but also that they would like to see more activities throughout the park system.

Parks and Recreation Director Scott Barnard said his department has already begun to work on those suggestions, but renovations to existing facilities and installation of new ones won't be acted on until the master plan is approved by the City Council.

Moler and Armstrong's presentation was just a first look at their suggestions, they said, although suggestions for spraygrounds, skateboard parks and a downtown park shined through.

Members of the commission gave the consultants their blessing to put the finishing touches on the plan, which is expected to be fully presented later this year.
