Mount Olive College graduation Aug. 18

Mount Olive College will graduate approximately 320 students at its 59th summer commencement on Saturday, Aug.18. Graduation exercises are scheduled for 2 p.m. in the George and Annie Dail Kornegay Arena.

The commencement speaker will be Mount Olive College alumnus Robert Byrd Kornegay. Kornegay has been the manager of marketing and member services at Tri-County Electric Membership Corp. for a decade. He is co-owner, secretary and treasurer of Kornegay Brothers Inc. He earned his first associate degree in applied science at North Carolina State University in 1982. His second associate degree in liberal arts and his bachelor degree in business administration were earned at Mount Olive College in 2006 and 2008.

Kornegay serves on the board of trustees for Mount Olive College and James Sprunt Community College, the board for Duplin Community Foundation, the board for Duplin Education Foundation, the board for El-Centro de Duplin, the agri-business advisory board for Mount Olive College, the board of deacons at Snow Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church of Mount Olive, and the Duplin Agri-Business Council board of directors. He is also on the board of directors of Wayne Alliance Inc. and a board member of Impact Wayne. Kornegay and his wife, Penny James, have three children together; Elliott, Chandler and Cameron.

Preceding graduation Mount Olive College will hold its traditional baccalaureate service in Southern Bank Auditorium in Raper Hall at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Otis Hamm will be the keynote speaker.

Hamm was born in Raleigh. He received a bachelor of science degree in church ministries from Mount Olive College in 2003, and a master of divinity degree with concentrations in Biblical studies and Christian education from Campbell University Divinity School in 2008. In July, Hamm earned a doctor of ministry degree in Christian spirituality from Washington Theological Union. He has served as pastor of three congregations since 1999, and has served in the leadership of the Original Free Will Baptist for 10 years. Currently he is an adjunct professor of religion at Mount Olive College, teaching various courses at three of the college's locations.
