They have no explanation for the fact that, to date, there has been an underwhelming response to their call for the names of local heroes.
But with only a few weeks until the event meant to honor them, organizers of Goldsboro's first Purple Heart Banquet are making one final appeal to the public.
And if it brings to the surface just more one name, they say, that is all that counts.
It started with a desire to honor men and women who have sacrificed for their country.
But preliminary discussions between members of the upstart Wayne County Purple Heart ultimately led to formalizing an evening of fellowship, storytelling and standing ovations for those who have been wounded in combat.
Several veterans have already signed up to attend the Aug. 10 Purple Heart Banquet.
But to make the event a success, the organization putting it on needs more names -- of those who wish to volunteer, those who wish to donate to the cause and, most importantly, those who have earned the decoration.
Those with information regarding any of the aforementioned requests are asked to contact Wayne County Veterans and Patriots Coalition President Bill Graham at 919-394-2200.
