Red, white and blue flags and fireworks gave way to blue flashing lights over the Fourth of July two-week holiday period as the Governor's Highway Safety Campaign unleashed "Booze It and Lose It," campaign -- a dragnet of DWI checkpoints and saturation patrols.

Results released this week show that Wayne County lawmen racked up 53 DWI charges from June 29 through July 9, three of them involving drivers under the age of 21.

A total 1,719 DWIs were recorded statewide. Officers maintained about 6,000 checkpoints during the campaign aimed at curbing drunk driving on the state's highways.

In Wayne, there were 117 checkpoints and 65 saturation patrols by law enforcement agencies. They led to the recovery of one stolen vehicle, two fugitives apprehended and more than 800 traffic violations besides the drunken driving charges.

Wayne also accounted for 18 of the 1,803 drug violations caught by law enforcement agencies over the campaign.

In a press release, State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti's said 63,485 criminal and traffic citations were issued across the state during the "successful" campaign.
