Special Olympics athletes participate in state games

Special Olympics Wayne County athletes recently participated in the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. Athletes participated in aquatics and track and field events.
The aquatics team, coached by Karen Sellner, Rich Kendall and Donna Countryman, earned 23 medals and six ribbons. They participated in various style swimming, walking and relay races. Wayne Barfield won three medals; Brett Drake received two medals and one ribbon; Star George, two medals and one ribbon; Mack Jennette, one medal; Connor LaLuz, two medals and two ribbons; Jesse Martinez, four medals; Jessie McCracken, three medals; David McRoy, one medal and one ribbon; Heather Pardue, three medals; Crystal Rouse, one medal; Zachary Scher, one medal and one ribbon; and Chris Yokely, one medal.
The athletics team, coached by Roy Tate, received 13 medals and two ribbons. Robert Benson won three medals; Miguel Sheffield, two medals and one ribbon; Andrew Bedard, two medals and one ribbon; and Jonathan Delano, Shannon Moore and Scott Britt, two medals each.
