Students creating video on choices

Students from Wayne County Early/Middle College High School Key Club were enlisted to create a video on making healthy life choices.
Their submission, "I Wish I Knew," is being used as part of the Young Moms Connect Community Video Project, affiliated with the N.C. Healthy Start Foundation. Its message centers around allowing young people to talk to their peers about healthy behaviors.
Young Moms Connect is a three-year federally funded grant the state received, and is locally coordinated by Wayne County Partnership for Children.
Cassie Kermode, Young Moms Connect director with the Partnership, helped recruit Kim McArthur-Dudley and Key Club students at WEMCH for the project because they have been recognized twice nationally for videos they have created.
The five-minute video tackles the subject of HIV and the potential risks from not practicing abstinence or safe sex.
Portraying the issue from a teenage perspective, and in their voice, will be helpful, said Mrs. Kermode.
"I am so pleased by the end product," Mrs. Kermode said. "These students have taken on a very difficult subject and I applaud their work. The video will be used throughout meetings and trainings to start discussion among other youth."
Young Moms Connect provides support, education and resources to young moms and moms-to-be. The program's goals include keeping the teens in school, preventing repeat pregnancies and helping young mothers maintain healthy relationships and make wiser choices for themselves and their children.
