Central/EW Alumni reunite this weekend

The 40th annual homecoming of Central/Eastern Wayne Alumni & Friends will be held Friday through Sunday, featuring the Central High classes of 1942, '52, '62 and the Eastern Wayne classes of 1972, '82, '92 and 2012 .

Events will begin Friday, May 25, with a banquet at the NCO Club at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, starting with a meet-and-greet at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Leander Lanier of Christianburg, Va., a member of the Class of 1972. Tickets are $30.

Dr. Lanier is a graduate of Fayetteville State University and Meharry Medical College, where he earned a doctor of dental surgery degree. After a 21-year career in the Army, he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. After his Army stint, he opened his own practice in Blacksburg, Va.

A dutch breakfast at 9 a.m. at Murray's restaurant on New Hope Road will kick off Saturday's festivities. A parade will start at noon in the Central Heights community, with lineup beginning at 11 a.m. on the Eastern Wayne Middle School campus. That will be followed by a picnic starting at 1 p.m. at Eastern Wayne Middle. Tickets are $15. Games and activities will be part of the afternoon program.

A homecoming ball will be held Saturday at 9 p.m. at Murray's, with music by LJ the DJ and Nowhere But Up R&B Band. Tickets are $15.

On Sunday, a worship service will be held at 11 a.m. at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church. An awards/gospel program will be held that evening at 5 p.m. at Woods Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, with guest speaker Ella Smith Rodgers of Fayetteville and the Class of 1962. Mrs. Rodgers attended North Carolina Central University and worked for Southern Bell for many years before retiring in 1997.

Each class involved is asked to sponsor a talent for the Sunday evening event and area churches also are invited to participate.
