Two local history scholars will lead the next lecture in a series commemorating the 150th anniversary of several Civil War battles this week.

Jim Hinnant and Kirk Keller will speak about Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium on the Wayne Community College campus.

The Sesquicentennial Civil War battle series are timed to coincide around the time frame the original event took place in 1862, said Jack Kannan, executive director of the WCC Foundation, sponsor of the free lecture series.

The next presentation will cover the pre-war life of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the Shenandoah Valley and how Jackson used its geography to his advantage, the specific battles that took place in the campaign, the affect it had on the American Civil War, and also Jackson's death and its affect on the Confederacy.

Hinnant, owner of Xpress Communications, was born in Wayne County and is a past faculty member of Wesleyan College and WCC. Keller currently teaches mechanical engineering at WCC and participates in re-enactments.

Upcoming lectures remaining in the series include: June 26, Keven Gambold speaking on The Seven Days Battle; Aug. 28, Col. (retired) Dan DeBree will discuss the Second Manassas Battle; Sept. 18, Josh Howard will discuss the Battle of Antietam; and Dec. 11, Randy Sauls will talk about the Battle of Fredericksburg and Goldsborough Bridge Battle.
