A 21-year-old Goldsboro man died in a single-car accident late Saturday night on South Beston Road.

Santos Vazquez, of Peachtree Drive, was killed after his 1998 Nissan SUV ran off the roadway about 10:28 p.m., First Sgt. Jerry Burton of the state Highway Patrol said today.

Vazquez was the only passenger in the vehicle.

He was traveling north and lost control of his vehicle as the road curves left about 400 feet north of the Piney Grove Church Road intersection, Burton said.

Vazquez was ejected from the SUV, which overturned several times and came to rest beside the highway.

When Wayne County EMS workers arrived Vazquez's body was lying in the roadway.

Burton said Vazquez was not wearing a safety belt.

Troopers reported Vazquez's estimated rate of speed at 85 mph. The posted speed limit at that portion of South Beston Road is 55 mph.

"Speed was a factor in the accident," Burton said.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine if any impairing substances might have played a part in the accident.
