Seven students were chosen to participate in the State Honors Chorus, performing in concerts held in downtown Winston-Salem last month.

The N.C. Elementary and Middle School Honors Choruses, sponsored by the N.C. Music Educators Association, provided the students with an opportunity to perform under a nationally known choral conductor. Each had to audition before a judge and was scored on such skills as breathing, posture, articulation, pitch and musicianship.

Leading up the concerts, the students spent several weeks learning song parts, both independently and with chorus instructors at their individual schools.

Those from Wayne County Public Schools were Charles Jones and Sara Pinkowski from Fremont STARS Elementary School; Yehdarm Choi, Joel Crawford and Mary Lindsey Edwards from Eastern Wayne Middle; Morgan Kohnen from Norwayne; and Makenzie Huf from Northwest Elementary.

Elementary and middle school students from across the state audition each year for the 150- to 160-member choruses. This is the ninth consecutive year that Eastern Wayne Middle School has had students chosen to participate.
