Seat belts save lives
All three people involved in an automobile collision on N.C. 55 Wednesday night were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near the highway's intersection with Shady Grove Road, about two miles west of Mount Olive.
Andrew Hollingsworth, 26, of Grantham School Road, has been charged by the state Highway Patrol with improper passing.
Highway Patrol Trooper J.B. Jones said Hollingsworth attempted to pass a vehicle in a legal passing zone, but the oncoming lane was not clear of traffic.
Hollingsworth's Mazda passenger car collided with a Kia passenger car driven by Ashley Kinard, 23, of Orangeburg, S.C. Wayne Rush Jr., 27, also was in the Kia.
Both Ms. Kinard and Hollingsworth have been released from the hospital. Rush remained under care as of Thursday night.
Jones said that speed and substance impairment have been ruled out as possible contributing factors to the accident.
The speed of both vehicles is estimated at the posted 55 mph, Jones said.
Jones added that all the occupants would have very likely been killed had all of them not been wearing their seat belts.
Business thefts
*Copper components were stripped from two a/c units belonging to Chiropractic Advantage, located at 1006 Corporate Drive, between Tuesday and Wednesday. The value of the stolen property was listed at $3,000.
*Ash Patel, the owner of Days Inn, located at 801 U.S. 70 E., reported the theft of two flat-screen TVs from one of the rooms. Patel said the suspect(s) entered the unit by unknown means. The combined value of the televisions was reported at $800.
