A 34-year-old Goldsboro man was shot to death on East Walnut Street late Wednesday night a block from his home.

They body of Marquell Hocutt was found in front of 1304 E. Walnut St. shortly after 10 p.m.

Minutes earlier, Goldsboro police received a call of shots fired at 1313 E. Walnut St. While police were en route, dispatch notified the responding officer that a suspect was shot and lying on the ground.

Sgt. Paige Learnard of the Goldsboro Police Department said today that Hocutt was shot multiple times.

Learnard declined to comment on whether or not Hocutt was in possession of a firearm when he was shot.

She did say that nothing directly points to the shooting being drug-related at this point in the investigation.

Learnard said investigators have not stopped working the case since last night, and that they plan to continue actively canvassing the neighborhood and talking to possible witnesses.

"I certainly put this (case) at the top or our list," Learnard said.

Hocutt was dead when the ambulance carrying him arrived at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The police report listed Hocutt's address as 1204 E. Walnut St.

His body was found near the intersection of North Audubon Avenue, in front an A-frame home with a brick chimney and bits of trash littered in the yard covered with recently fallen leaves.

Three patrol cars remained near the scene as late as 7:15 a.m. today.
