PIKEVILLE --The N.C. Top Gun Pilot competition will be held Nov. 5 at the Wayne Executive Jetport.

The fly-in, co-sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation's Division of Aviation, runs from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and includes educational seminars, flight training, free kids flights, vendor displays and a banquet. Last year, more than 400 people attended the event.

"Without question, safety is our top priority," said Division of Aviation Director Richard Walls. "This event is a great way to expose people to the wonderful world of aviation, as well as allow pilots to hone their skills."

Some of the events at the fly-in include:

* A flight competition to see who is Eastern North Carolina's "Top Gun" pilot. Aviators will test their skills in takeoffs, landings and other practical flying maneuvers for the 2011 Eastern North Carolina Top Gun trophy

* Seminars on radio communications from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Air Safety Institute, takeoffs and landings, Color Code System, weather, flight maneuvering, aircraft maintenance and a special Learn To Fly seminar for non-pilots

* Flight simulators available for pilots to practice skills involving Visual Flight Rules and Instrument Meteorological Conditions

* Free airplane rides -- with parental permission -- for everyone ages 8-17 provided by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1114 of Apex.

Pilots can register for seminars at www.faasafety.gov.
