GREENVILLE -- Two Goldsboro residents were inducted Oct. 15 into the East Carolina University College of Education Annual Educators Hall of Fame.

For each inductee, sponsors provided a monetary gift of $1,000 for the Educators Hall of Fame Scholarship endowment, which funds merit-based scholarships for education students.

Inducted were Kurt John-Charles Garner, a teacher at Pitt Community College and D.H. Conley High School. He is president of the East Carolina Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional association for educators.

Garner was recognized as the D.H. Conley Teacher of the Year in 2010 and the Pitt County Schools Teacher of the Year in 2011. He earned his bachelor of science degree in business education and marketing, along with a master of arts in vocational education from ECU. Garner was sponsored by Marcy Romary.

Also inducted was Dr. Diane D. Kester, ECU professor of library science and executive editor of the Journal of Curriculum and Instruction. At ECU, she was named Outstanding Educator and received the Max Ray Joyner Award for Faculty Service through Continuing Education.

Kester received bachelor's degrees from Texas Woman's University, a master of arts in education, a master of library science and an educational specialist degree from ECU. She holds a Ph.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Begun in 1999, the Educators Hall of Fame recognizes service and support for education. Approximately 350 outstanding educators have been inducted into the society, with more than $390,000 raised for student scholarships. The endowment goal is $1 million.
