The 28th annual Walk for Hunger was held by United Church Ministries on Sunday. More than 200 walkers and runners came from 19 member churches.
Lee Lamb of Salem United Methodist Church ran the distance in 36 minutes. Mark and Ben Sawyer of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church finished in 36.5 minutes.
The first walkers to finish were Meg Kidd of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church and Barbara West of Saint Luke United Methodist Church in 59 minutes. Three walkers from Madison Avenue Baptist Church, Kenny Stempin, Bryan Aldrin and Austin Gray, finished in 60 minutes.
The Walk for Hunger is United Church Ministries' only fundraiser. The total amount raised this year is not available yet -- donations are still being collected. But in 2010, the walk raised $16,000, helping 1,331 people in Wayne County, playing a vital role in helping the Center remain open to help provide assistance with food, rent, utilities, medical and other needs as necessary.
United Church Ministries, 119 W. Walnut St., is volunteer-run and pays only the director.
