A Greenville man was arrested for murder Monday after being picked up at Cherry Hospital.

Sgt. J. Carlton Williams, public information officer for the Greenville Police Department, explained that Greenville police traveled to Goldsboro Monday to pick up Kevin Kleber, who was wanted in the Jan. 9 shooting death of his father, Roy Kleber.

"The investigators knew exactly where he was. They actually picked him up at Cherry Hospital, and he agreed to go with them," Williams said. "Then, once they got back to Pitt County, he was told of the warrants. He was actually served at the jail."

Kleber, 25, is charged with one open count of murder and was held at the Pitt County Detention Facility without bond. He had a first court appearance scheduled for today.

The arrest came after Kleber initially told police that a light-skinned black man had come into his East 10th Street apartment in the early morning hours of Jan. 9, and shot his father in the neck.

According to Greenville police, however, Kleber later recanted that story and admitted to shooting his father himself. No motive was given, however.

Roy Kleber, 55, was from Vero Beach, Fla., and was apparently in town visiting his son.
