People needing help from or wanting to donate to Pennies From Angels will no longer find the charity at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center. Helen Harwood, founder and operator of the charity, has retired from SMOC and is running the organization out of her home.
"Nothing will change about that fund," Mrs. Harwood said. "100 percent of the money raised goes to help clients in our local area."
Pennies From Angels helps those going through a medical crisis, such as cancer or diabetes, Mrs. Harwood said. It helps patients in Wayne, Sampson, Wilson, Nash and Johnston counties.
"If someone needs assistance with medications, Pennies From Angels can help one time," she said. "But I can help get them on another program that will help longer."
The fund also helps with rent, groceries, utilities and limited medical supplies.
There is no age limit for those needing help from Pennies From Angels.
"If patients call me, I can also direct them to resources in the community where they can get more help," Mrs. Harwood said. "I also have bras, prostheses and clothing, all new, that I can give to clients in need."
Mrs. Harwood stressed that she can do just as much with Pennies From Angels from her home as she did from SMOC.
Anyone needing help should contact her at 252-246-0620.
Those wanting to make a donation may mail it to Mrs. Harwood at P.O. Box 511, Black Creek, NC, 27813.
