Gaspar Gonzalez, longtime advocate for Hispanics in Wayne County and former Democratic chairman and magistrate, is being transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Virginia, he told the News-Argus Thursday.
For the past few weeks, he has been receiving treatment at the rehab center of Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was injured during a fall from a ladder at his home in late December.
"I'm partially paralyzed," he said, explaining that the accident bruised his spinal cord and several vertebrae. "But I have regained control of my hands and arms and feet, so there's no need to operate. That means I can recuperate at least 80 percent."
Gonzalez said he expects to be transferred in the next few days and will likely be in Virginia for the next two or three months.
