The inaugural firing of a 7,000 pound, 20-foot Civil War era canon replica took place at Fort Macon State Park took place Saturday, January 29, 2011. The canon was built at Wayne Community College by more than 100 students, instructors and staff from the mechanical engineering, machining and welding technology programs. The canon was loaded with five pounds of powder - and had it held a canon ball, it would have a range of a mile.
