A young Goldsboro woman has been questioned by police in connection with the early Sunday morning stabbing death of Donald Ray Battle, 48, of Hack Drive in Dudley.

Police were called to a vacant house at 1510 Dakota St., at the corner of Fifth St. in Goldsboro at 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning where they discovered Battle, who was pronounced death on the scene by emergency medical responders.

"It is a homicide," Goldsboro police Sgt. Dwayne E. Dean said today. "The body will be autopsied this afternoon in Greenville. We have conducted several interviews and have interviewed the person who is responsible for Mr. Battle's death."

Dean said officers have several follow-up interviews to conduct and that they will turn the findings over to the district attorney's office to decide if there is enough to warrant charges.

Dean said that Battle was stabbed with a knife and that the weapon has been recovered.

"It stemmed from an altercation between him and the female subject," Dean said.

He said that the two were not acquaintances. They apparently met elsewhere and ended up at the vacant house where Battle was found in the back yard, Dean said.

The name of the suspect, who is said to be in her 20s, has not been released. Dean also declined comment on possible motive.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contacted police Investigator Dwayne Bevell at 919-580-4218.
