Local election primary filing period ends quietly

Filing for the 2010 elections ended Friday, with only a handful of local seats in contention.
In Wayne County races, contests for sheriff and the districts 5 and 6 seats on the school board are being contested. District attorney, clerk of court, school board seats in districts 1 and 4 and the lone district court judge seat up for vote are uncontested.
Incumbents District Court Judge Beth Heath, District Attorney Branny Vickory and Clerk of Court Pam Minshew and Board of Education Member John Grantham face no opposition. Neither does Chris West in the District 1 school board race.
Incumbent Sheriff Republican Carey Winders is seeking re-election. Challenger Glenn Barnes, a Democrat, is seeking to unseat him.
Arnold Flowers filed for the District 5 seat on the county Board of Education held by George Moye. Moye filed to keep his seat.
In school District 6, Trebor "Tree" Jackson is running against incumbment Rick Pridgen.
School board races are non-partisan, as are judicial races.
In the race for state House Seat 10, Steven LaRoque of Kinston, a Republican who has held the seat in the past, wants to take it back from Democrat Van Braxton of Kinston. State Rep. Efton Sager, a Goldsboro Republican representing District 11, faces no opposition. But in District 21, incumbent Democrat Larry Bell of Clinton has a challenger in Republican Deann Poirier of Mount Olive.
Both state Senate seats involving county voters will be contested in the fall. In District 5, Republican Louis Pate of Mount Olive, a former member of the House, is aiming to unseat Democrat Don Davis of Snow Hill. In District 12, Democrat Jody McLeod of Clayton hopes to do the same to Republican David Rouzer of Smithfield.
Most local terms are for four years. State legislative terms are for two years.
The general primary is May 4. Election Day is Nov. 2.
Candidates for the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation Board can file between June 14 and July 2. Two seats on that board are up for election.
