Pikeville employees to help make residents' homes energy efficient

Pikeville, a town where residents struggle with electric costs because of a deal penned in the early 1980s, will address the issue by having town employees help to install energy-saving devices, an official said.
Town Administrator Kathie Fields said Wednesday is officially being called the "Day of Caring."
That means town of Pikeville employees will help install compact fluorescent light bulbs, and perform tasks like checking hot water and refrigerator temperature.
Town workers also will install outlet sealers, which keep air and accompanying heat from flowing around electrical outlets, Mrs. Fields said.
The organizers will also "educate the homeowners about energy-efficient practices," she said.
ElectriCities, the trade name for the public power cooperative that manages the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency, is helping with the event, Mrs. Fields said.
