Wayne Special Olympians bring home medals

Special Olympics Wayne County participated in the Special Olympics North Carolina Mid Summer Tournament in Raleigh July 18-20. Rich Walderman headed up the Wayne County delegation of 56 bowlers, equestrian riders and support staff.

Equestrian teams members competed in English and Western Equitation, Western Riding and Working Trails categories. Team members and awards included Kristie Garris, bronze medal and ribbon; Leah Jones, bronze medal; Fernando Alcantar, ribbon; Heather Pardue, silver medal; Jamie Taylor, silver medal; Pete Lewis, bronze medal; Rob Presson, silver medal; Mikaela Casey, ribbon. The delegation was led by Jana Foote, Andrea Dawley and Melanie Nix.

Bowlers, led by Dorothy Moore, Debi Walderman and Charlotte and Don Jenkins, competed in singles, doubles and team events. Participants and their awards in the singles category included Alan Jenkins, silver medal; Jonathan Delano, silver medal; and Charlie Nail, bronze medal.

Doubles competitors included Erica Walderman and Melissa Stanford, bronze medal; Scott Carswell and Robert Walker, silver medal; and Robert Benson and Miguel Sheffield, bronze medal. For women's four-person: Lane Turner, Jenifer Cruz, Rhonda Barwick and Diane Jordan, gold medal; and men's four-man team: Randy Barwick, Paul Edwards, Jay Zambelli and Shannon Moore, gold medal.
