The Wayne County Health Department was recently named Public Health Department of the Year by the N.C. Public Health Association eastern district, which encompasses 53 counties.
In addition, two other honors were also presented. Karen Creech from the laboratory was named Laboratorian of the Year, and Foy Coley, Jr., son of Evelyn Coley, director of nursing, received a $1,000 college scholarship.
The Health Department's award recognized its many accomplishments over the past two years, including the staff redesign of the seasonal flu clinic, which sees an average of 500 patients in a day at its peak; the maternity clinic's open access model for scheduling patients; cross training of translators; and outreach efforts to the community.
