MOUNT OLIVE -- Residents of Crest Drive who spoke to Town Board members last month about the deteriorating condition of their street will likely be satisfied soon.

Board members voted unanimously to pave the 100 and 200 blocks of the road Thursday, a project they estimate will cost $56,000.

The cost of the effort will be covered by $60,000 in Powell Bill Funds left over from last year, Town Manager Charles Brown said.

Paving of the 600 block of Martin Street at a cost of $24,000 also was approved.

"Do we have the money for that?" outgoing Mayor Ruff Huggins asked before the vote.

"We can do it," Town Manager Charles Brown responded.

At their last meeting, Brown suggested that the board prioritize paving projects for the town before the new Powell Bill Funds arrived.

The new money will not be used until the $60,000 already in the town coffer is depleted.

In other business:

*Board members formally approved the purchase of a new Ladder Fire Truck for the Mount Olive Fire Department.

*Board members signed an Engineering Services Agreement for USDA funding of town sewer project, in the amount of $1.6 million.

*Board member Tom Preston read a letter of commendation and citation for "outstanding performance" that will go to the Mount Olive Police officers involved in "Operation Clean Streets," a sting that led to the arrest of nine and saw seizure of money and property associated with the local drug trade.

*Mayor Pro Tempore Jimmy Kornegay read a resolution honoring the service of outgoing Mayor Ruff Huggins. Those in attendance gave Huggins a standing ovation.
