Health Department lists food sites with top scores

The number of eating establishments in Wayne County earning high marks on inspection ratings is growing, health officials said Tuesday night during the Golden A Award ceremonies.
The much-sought-after Golden A award is given annually by the Wayne County Health Department to restaurants and food stands earning 95 percent or higher on four inspections throughout the year. The latest round produced 145 recipients, as compared to 135 last year.
"It's an accomplishment because when we go in, we check a lot of things," said James Roosen, health director, ticking off a laundry list that ranged from food temperature to vermin.
Two years ago, 168 food stands received the commendation. Presenters last year attributed the drop to 135 to the closing of the Winn Dixie chain, a consistent recipient.
This marks the ninth year for the Golden A program. Based on scores given during health inspections, it is given in five categories -- restaurants, food stands, institutional food services, meat markets and school lunchrooms.
Tommy Gibson, chairperson of the Board of Health, shared a breakdown of the number of participants in the program.
"In the last year, 68 of the 210 restaurants qualified, which is 32 percent," he said. "For food stands, 22 out of 67 qualified, or 33 percent."
As for the other categories, all four private schools qualified, as did all 29 eligible public schools, 12 out of 18 institutional kitchens, and 10 of the 18 meat markets inspected.
"We're proud of you," Gibson said to the audience. "We know you do a good job. ... You make Wayne County a safer place to live."
For the sixth year in a row, Schlotzsky's Deli was named winner in the restaurant category for having the highest average for the year, with a score of 102.
Others with the highest averages in their categories included Wal-Mart seafood in the food stands category; Brian Center for institutional food services; Food Lion No. 2581, Pikeville, meat market; and a four-way tie in the school lunchroom category between Meadow Lane, Eastern Wayne and Rosewood elementary schools and Rosewood High School.
