Museum is closer to new director

Museum officials are getting closer to the end of their search for a new director.
Wayne County Historical Association President Preston Garris had hoped to have chosen somebody to replace former museum director Janet Clayton by Tuesday, but now expects to have a choice for the post by the end of the week.
Garris said seven people have applied, and the selection committee has narrowed the field down to three applicants. All are living in Wayne County, he said.
Meanwhile, association board members Charles Ellis, Chris and Anna Lawson and Bobby and Velda Faye Howell are taking turns running the museum during its winter hours of noon until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
The job is part-time and requires a special person who doesn't mind the hours, Garris said. For some retired folks, he said, the 25 hours a week are a little too long, and for parents with children in school, he said working from noon to 4 or 5 p.m. makes it impossible to be home when their children return from school.
The job starts out paying $9 an hour, depending on qualifications, Garris said.
Once a director is hired, the museum's hours will likely expand. Closing time will become 5 p.m. instead of 4.
