Scam artist sought

Tina Michelle Newsome, 26, Echo Drive, LaGrange, has been identified by Wayne County Sheriff's officials as the woman who allegedly has been conning local residents out of money using a "sob story." Authorities say Newsome, who uses the name "Rose Whitley," has been operating in the area of U.S. Hwy. 13 North near the Greene County Line. The suspect has told several victims she is stranded with two children. She has promised to pay them back by mailing a money order. The woman has been using the same story for at least six months. Newsome is described as white, about 25-30 years old, 5-feet-6, heavy build with dark brown hair. Anyone who wished to press charges against Ms. Newsome is asked to call Sgt. R. Thomas Flores at 919-731-1487.

Investigations

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:

*Clifton E. Thompson reported someone stole eight feeder pigs, valued at $600, from a farm on Claridge Nursery Road.

*A 16-year-old male was found carrying a concealed knife with a three-inch blade on school property at Eastern Wayne High School.

Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:

*Someone broke into Dr. Clement McCaskill's office on Wendy Way and stole a time clock and a $10 bill. Total estimated damage was $760.

Accidents

Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $23,800 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.

*Daren Lamar Reid was cited for fleeing and attempting to elude an officer and no operator's license following a run-in with the highway patrol. Trooper J.S. Smith activated his lights and sirens and attempted to stop the fleeing suspect. Reid, 16, Woodland Church Road, who was traveling west on Dawson Road in Mount Olive lost control of his 2005 Ford while negotiating a curve at 1:56 a.m. Sunday. Reid ran off the road, skidded across the lawn and slammed into a mobile home in Edwards Mobile Home Park, 181 Dawson Drive. Reid was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. The vehicle sustained $6,000 in damage.

*Crystal L. Goodden Hoeper, 17, of Deerborn Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after a three-car accident on U.S. 70 east. Janice Ward Smith, of County Line Road, LaGrange, and Hoeper and Smith were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.
