WCC voter registration drive to be held Friday

Just one vote can make the difference in any election. But Wayne County residents can't make their voices heard unless they first register to vote.
"Look at how close the elections have been? The proof is out there. We had two ties in the municipal elections (in May). If people decide to vote, they can make a difference," Wayne County Board of Elections Director Gary Sims said.
The Wayne Board of Elections and the Wayne Community College Student Government Association will hold a voter registration drive Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the college's atrium, voter registration coordinator Connie Kammler said.
The voter registration drive will be held in conjunction with Wayne Community College's Constitution Day. Lawyer Phil Baddour, state Rep. Louis Pate, state Sen, Fred Smith and retired Army Maj. Gen. Hugh Overholt will discuss different aspects of the Constitution throughout the morning.
The registration deadline for the Nov. 7 general election is Oct. 13.
Board of Elections employees and student government members will be encouraging students to take extra voter registration applications with them for friends and parents, Sims said.
"We don't want people to just grab one. Grab three. We have thousands and thousands and thousands of them," Sims said.
If a resident is unsure what information the Wayne Board of Elections has, Sims said he or she should re-register with the office. By election day, poll workers will have that voter's most recent information, ensuring a quicker vote.
"You don't have to do any of the paperwork on election day. If you have an updated voter registration card, it makes the election day process easier," Sims said.
If residents are unable to attend Friday's drive but want to register to vote, voter registration cards are available at the Wayne County Library and the Board of Elections office at 209 S. William St., Sims said.
