A Rosewood Middle School teacher was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning as a precautionary measure after breaking up a fight between two students.

School officials confirmed the incident, which happened around 9:30 on Wednesday, and said that had it not been that the teacher had a past history of health problems, news about the situation would not have spread so quickly.

"The teacher was breaking up an altercation between two students," said Ken Derksen, public information officer for the school system. "In the process, one student struck the teacher. In the excitement, the teacher was a little short of breath."

She was transported to the hospital, where she was treated and released, Derksen said.

The school did press charges against the student, whose name was not released, for assaulting both the teacher and another student. Beyond that, Derksen said the school district could not discuss disciplinary action.
