Two WCC students honored for academics

Two Wayne Community College students have been honored for their academic success and demonstrated leadership ability.
Tessa Brannon and Rebecca Mooney were selected for recognition at the N.C. Community College system's eighth annual Academic Excellence Awards Luncheon held recently in Raleigh. They joined students from each of the 58 community colleges in North Carolina.
Ms. Brannon, who has a 3.4 grade point average, will graduate this spring with an associate in arts degree. At the college, she has served as an officer in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society chapter and was a member of the Fine Arts Club and International Students Club. She also appeared in several plays at the college and holds down a job as well as volunteering with developmentally challenged children.
Ms. Mooney is working toward her associate degree in nursing. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, is treasurer for the Associate Degree Student Nurses Association Level I and volunteers as an Ambassador for the college. She also is involved with several programs at her church, works part-time at an assisted living facility and also house and pet sits. She has a 3.57 grade point average.
To be selected for the honor, students must be currently enrolled, have completed at least 12 hours toward a degree and have a grade point average of 3.25 or better. In addition to academic achievement, the selection committee also considered campus involvement and community services.
The event is sponsored by the State Board of Community Colleges and the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents.
