Third defendant
gets 4-5 years
The third defendant charged with robbing several restaurant delivery men has been sentenced to about four to five years in prison.
Gilbert McNeil III, 20, of Olivia Lane pleaded guilty last week to two counts of armed robbery and was sentenced by Wayne County Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell to 44 to 62 months.
McNeil pleaded guilty to taking part in the armed holdups of Daniel Newton, who delivering an order July 14 for Pizza Hut, and Michael McCrae, who was delivering an order July 29 for Pizza Hut. Both orders were left at a house on Bright Street.
Two other men -- Derek Andre Kornegay, 19, of South Herman Street and Julian Devon Sauls, 20, of Hugh Street -- pleaded guilty last week to those robberies, and a third holdup of Futt Suan Wong, who was delivering food for a Chinese restaurant on July 31. Kornegay and Sauls were sentenced to 51 to 71 months.
McNeil and the other two men were developed as suspects after police investigators obtained a search warrant for the Bright Street home and found property that had been stolen from the three delivery men.
7 hurt in wrecks
Seven people were injured and damages were estimated at $58.575 in nine recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured in a one-car wreck at 3:30 p.m. Sunday on N.C. 55 near Stanley Chapel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Edgar Guerra, 18, and his passenger, Hector Cantera, 18, both of Cabin Creek Drive, Seven Springs, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. No charges were filed. The car, valued at $4,000, was demolished. The report said the car's steering had broken, the driver had lost control, and the car had run off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned.
*Damages were estimated at $10,500 in a three-car, rear-end collision at 7:55 p.m. Saturday on Royall Avenue near Landmark Drive, Goldsboro police said. One eastbound driver, Jaffari Donté Ward, 16, of Wooten Street, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other drivers were Molly Kathleen Smith, 27 of Tiffany Road and Ava Nicole Banks, 20, of Greenville.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a two-vehicle, rear-end crash at 8:15 p.m. Saturday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive, police said. One northbound motorist, James Michael Koonce, 22, of Weaver Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation and driving while his license revoked. The other driver was David Shirley Maduzici, 46, of North Leslie Street.
*A bicyclist was struck by a following car at 6:59 p.m. Friday at Olivia Lane and Slocumb Street, police said. Roderick Miller, 29, of East Pine Street was treated after emergency-room treatment. Miller, who said he had stopped for a red light, was knocked on the hood the car and then slid off, the report said. The driver fled. Damages were set at $75.
*Damages were put at $5,000 in a two-vehicle, rear-end wreck at 5:20 p.m. Friday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near North Berkeley Boulevard, police said. One westbound driver, Meredith L. Cox, 24, of Jordan Bluff Drive, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The other driver was Evelyn H. Fitzmorris, 57, of Tarklin Drive.
*A driver was injured and both vehicles were destroyed in a rear-end collision at 7:35 a.m. Thursday at Rosewood and Charlie Braswell roads, the Highway Patrol said. Janice Hayes Mitchell, 57, of Old Smithfield Road, was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Horace Adolph Mills, 66, of Becton Circle, was charged with failure to reduce speed. The vehicles were valued at $8,000.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Amanda C. Howard, 39, and a passenger, James Andrew Howard, 16, both of Aycock Coston Lane, Pikeville, were released after emergency-room treatment. A westbound driver, Danny Keith Cooke, 48, of South Walnut Street, Princeton, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Ms. Howard was going south. An eastbound car, driven by Melissa S. Odham, 41, of Garner, was struck by a tire that had come off Cooke's van.
*A driver was injured and damages were set at $5,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 10:33 a.m. Wednesday on Old Grantham Road near Summit Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Chelsea Erin Carr, 19, of Old Grantham Road was released after emergency-room treatment. The second westbound driver, Terry Ann Reed, 48, of Meadow Lane, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*Damages were estimated at $9,000 in a two-car collision at 10 p.m. April 3 at U.S. 117 and the entrance to Five Points Shopping Center, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Charles William Howard, 29, of Southern Plaza Drive, Dudley, was making a left turn into a driveway. Howard and a southbound driver, Lavonda Renee Kenon, 27, of South Charles Street, LaGrange, said they had the green light. No charges were filed.
Residential thefts
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these residential break-ins:
*Two laptop computers, a digital camera and jewelry were stolen Friday from a home in the 100 block of Friendswood Drive, deputies said. The jewelry included a one-carat diamond and ruby ring. The jewelry, valued at $9,473, and the camera, valued at $400, were recovered in nearby woods. The resident, Sandra R. Tart, put a $2,000 value on the laptops.
*A DVD player and a handgun were stolen Friday from a home in the 1000 block of Spring Bank Road, deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside and then damaged a lamp and a desk, the report said. The resident, D.P. Grady, estimated the value of the stolen property at $300 and damages at $470.
*A 32-inch television was stolen Friday after a door and a window were broken at a home in the 2900 block of Arrington Bridge Road, deputies said. The resident, I.G. King, said the TV was worth $300 and set damages at $900.
*Video-game equipment and a phone were stolen Friday after a door was pried open at a home in the 100 block of Deborah Lane, deputies said. The resident, Jean Daniel Cormier, put a $380 value on his property.
*A compact disc player was stolen Friday after a door was damaged at a home in the 200 block of Larue Circle, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Robert Martin, put a $40 value on the player and set damage at $100.
Fire investigated
An outdoor fire that spread from shrubbery to a building on Saturday was referred to Goldsboro for a further investigation, reports said.
Damages were estimated at $1,900 to an outside wall and a window at Howell Support Services at 907-B Landmark Drive.
A citizen had call 911 about the fire. When firefighters answered the 8:43 a.m. call, Assistant Chief Gary Whaley said he did know how the fire had started and referred it to police.
False pretense
A 23-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Michael Joseph Richardson of Cashwell Drive was accused of stealing property, including a checkbook and mail, that belonged to his roommate, Michael Anglin, the report said. Richardson was released from custody on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
Missing
Two teenaged boys have been reported missing to Goldsboro police.
*Javonta Antwan Dunn, 14, of 1008 Eighth Street was described as black, 5-feet-9 and 125 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When he was seen last at 6:40 p.m. Friday, he was wearing a black, shirt, dark blue jeans and black sneakers.
*Elin Charles Dewayne Wilson, 17, of 2501 Norwood Ave. was described as black, 5-feet-8 and 148 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion. When he was seen last at 9 a.m. Friday, he was wearing a gray sweater, pants and glasses.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of either teen was asked to call police at 705-6527.
