Musician Aycock to be honored as N.C. 'Icon'

Jimmy Aycock of Fremont will be the first artist honored in November Entertainment's "Carolina Icons" program.
A long-time musician, composer and teacher, Aycock will be featured in a live concert and documentary.
The idea to produce such a show was that of Larry Monk, head of November Entertainment.
Monk, who worked as an independent producer in California before moving to Goldsboro, was impressed by Aycock's talent.
"I thought, 'Wow!' Does anyone know of his talent, his skill? Does anyone know what he's capable of?'" Monk says.
While in California, Monk saw a lot of mainstream artists who were either from North Carolina or had state connections.
"We have these diamonds here," he says. "This is something that needs to be shared.
"'Carolina Icons' was created to exemplify the best of who and what we are. There needs to be an outlet we can cultivate what we have as a people."
Monk says that PBS wants to broadcast the documentary nationwide and that PAX will broadcast the concert statewide.
The documentary will include interviews with Aycock and those who know him, video of him in the classroom and clips from his concert.
The concert is scheduled for Saturday, May 27, at Wayne Community College. It will be preceded by a reception at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person and can be obtained by logging onto www.november-entertainment.com.
