Princeton board adds curb, gutters to project

PRINCETON -- Curbs and gutters are not usually a big problem, but they are in Princeton.
The town board found out during Monday night's monthly meeting that the new town hall on West Dr. Donnie Jones Boulevard must have curbs and gutters, because they were included in the restrictive covenants by the landowners, Friendswood LLP, which also is developing the nearby Princeton Commons.
Curbs and gutters had not been included in the plans, the town's contracted engineer, C.T. Clayton Sr. of New Bern said, because of the cost.
Clayton said the curbs and gutters would cost $22,630. But then the new building would have to be raised a foot and landscaping costs would add another $15,377.
Clayton said there was enough money in the contingency fund to pay for the curbs and gutters and would leave $21,000. He said he would not charge for the extra time and would devise the most economical design possible.
He also explained that because the project covered more than one acre, watershed concerns also would come into play. The town could mitigate the lost wetlands acreage elsewhere.
Haddock's motion to approve the changes was passed unanimously.
The town board again delayed action on a Masonic cornerstone for the new town hall.
Officials from Friendswood LLC asked the town to extend its reimbursement for the cost of water lines from 10 to 25 years for its property at Princeton Commons. The board did not act on the request.
