Cigarettes stolen

from Eureka store

EUREKA -- About $1,028 worth of property, including 48 cartons of cigarettes, was stolen between Sunday and Monday from the Eureka Mini-Mart at 2710 N.C. 222 East. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported that the thief had damaged the front-door and a window in order to get inside. Damages were estimated at $300. Other items stolen included 20 packs of cigars, 30 lighters, a Dale Earnhardt cap, a toboggan, candy, soft drinks, other snack food and $45.54 worth of gas, the report said.

Burglary, assault

Mount Olive police are investigating a burglary and assault that happened early Sunday on South Church Street. Fernando Moreno Martinez, 21, told investigators that he was asleep at a friend's house when a man broke into the home about 4:30 am. and stabbed him with a pocketknife.

Martinez said was alone in the house at the time of the attack. Police said today they have a suspect but would release no further details of the investigation.

Martinez was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, investigators said.

3 hurt in wrecks

Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $20,000 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.

*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 4:50 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Road and the entrance to Eastern Wayne High School. Nenita Padilla Jones, 46, of Brantwood Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. James David Condon, 19, of Hood Swamp Road, LaGrange, was charged with a yield violation. Damages were set at $4,000.

*A car was destroyed in a wreck at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 117, south of Arrington Bridge Road. Winford Schley Ulmer, 52, of Arrow Point Drive, was forced him off the road by another vehicle, the report said. The car was valued at $7,000. Other damage was put at $800. The other driver fled.

*A passenger was injured when a car struck a deer at 11:55 p.m. Jan. 10 on Thunder Swamp Road near O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ann Pilkington, 53, of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. Damage was set at $1,200.

Investigations

Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:

*A thief smashed a window ay Goldsboro Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep between Sunday and Monday, entered two locked offices, stole $800 and a car key and then drove away in a blue 2002 Dodge Neon, police said. The car was valued at $4,000. Damage was estimated at $630.

*Two televisions, a stereo system, video-game equipment and 15 DVDs were stolen Monday from a home in the 1100 block of Genoa Road. The resident, K.H. Harville, put an $1,860 value on the property. No sign of forced entry was reported.

*Sixteen windows were broken between Wednesday and Monday at a rental home in the 500 block of East Walnut Street. Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the home, owned by Leroy Way of Kinston.
