State officials want to talk about water use; meeting set here

State officials will hold a public hearing Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. at Wayne Community College for residents of the eastern part of the state to comment on proposed changes in how the state deals with water shortages.
The state Environmental Management Commission and the Division of Water Resources is seeking advice on how to best prepare the state's residents and businesses for severe droughts. Proposed rules would govern water use during drought.
The agency was directed by the Legislature to come up with guidelines to minimize harmful effects of drought on public health, safety and the state's economy.
The proposed rules were developed in consultation with an advisory panel comprised of all types of water users, environmental protection agencies and natural resources advocacy groups.
State officials said their aim is to establish clear guidelines for water use by the public, state agencies, local governments, agriculture and industries.
Similar hearings are being held this week in Lexington and on Jan. 31 in Asheville.
