Nine area students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University won 14 scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year.
Two students received the prestigious James A. Graham Endowed Scholars Program scholarship, which honors the late state Agriculture Commissioner, and requires additional communication or public policy courses. They are Richard Correll's son Neil, who also won the Woodrow and Eunice Colclough Scholarship Endowment - as did Christy Jeffers, the daughter of Cindy and John Jeffers -- and Jason Thornton, son of Diane and Kenneth Thornton, who also won the Donald W. Mabe, for poultry science majors. All are from Goldsboro.
Other student winners:
*Christopher Durusky, son of Ann and Len Durusky, Goldsboro: Paul Elam McCarthy Memorial; undergraduate pursuing a degree in dentistry or medicine.
*Daniel Gray, son of Bonnie and Royce Gray, LaGrange: renewable Fred G. Bond Tobacco Scholarship, for students pursuing a career in tobacco farming or production, corporate or university research or commodity management. Also, the Tom and Louise Morris, for students majoring in poultry science.
*Thomas Hinnant, son of Sandra and Robert Hinnant, Goldsboro, Zucker Turfgrass Management and Landscape Maintenance, for Agricultural Institute students with work experience in turfgrass and landscape maintenance. Also, the two-year Carolina Golf Association, which encourages CALS turfgrass management majors to prepare for careers that contribute to golf's advancement.
*Leslie Lawrence, parents not listed, the A. Tab Williams, which honors the 1950 NC State CALS graduate who chairs A.T. Williams Oil Co., which operates Wilco Filling Stations and Foodmarts Also, the A.J. Haynes, which recognizes Haynes' 40 years of service to FCX Inc.
*Elizabeth Meyer, daughter of Garry and Peggy Meyer of Goldsboro, the James Everette Brown, established by NC State alum Brown for CALS undergraduates.
*Daniel Whitley III, son of Dr. Dan and Beki Whitley of Goldsboro, the Connor Kennet Jr., for a rising junior or senior poultry science major.
Johnson & Wales University named three area students to the Dean's List for the fall semester. To be honored, students must maintain a 3.4 grade-point average. Corey Cantrell of Goldsboro, Donald Rouse of Dudley and Jonathan Warrick of Goldsboro were named to the Dean's List. The school is a private institution offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, food service, education, hospitality and technology at campuses in Providence, R.I., Charleston, S.C., Norfolk, Va., North Miami, Fla., Denver, Colo., and Charlotte.
An Eastern Wayne High School teacher has been nominated for the 2006 Disney Teacher Award. Theatre arts teacher Michael Daughtry will be among teachers from across the country considered for the award. In addition to letters of recommendation, he will submit an application that includes how he approaches collaboration in his school and an event that shaped him as a teacher. Honorees will be announced in late spring and celebrated at an awards gala in July. Four will be chosen as outstanding teachers, with one being named Disney Teacher of the Year.
