Schools to observe drug prevention week

The Wayne County Public Schools will participate in one of the nation's oldest and largest illegal drug prevention campaigns next week.
During the week of Oct. 24, several schools will take part in "Red Ribbon Week," an effort promoting learning more about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Red ribbons will be worn to show schools are in favor of a drug-free America.
On Monday, Dillard Middle School will host a guest speaker from Goldsboro police to help students understand how drugs and alcohol abuse can lead to violence, crimes, and even jail time. At Mount Olive Middle School on Wednesday, a mental health expert from Eastpointe is scheduled to teach students about substance abuse and how drug and alcohol addiction can destroy lives and families.
"Red Ribbon Week" commemorates the 20th anniversary of the kidnapping and murder of Kiki Camarena, a drug enforcement agent who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico.
Friends and neighbors wore red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards illegal drugs.
