For a few minutes at a time on Wednesday and Thursday, residents and business owners along U.S. 13 north went without power due to problems experienced by Progress Energy.

Keith Westbrook, the company's operations manager in Goldsboro, said the temporary outages occurred because of a malfunction in a piece of distribution equipment that supplies energy to the area that includes sections along Berkeley Boulevard, U.S. 13 North and New Hope Road.

Residents in the areas were without power for less than five minutes on Thursday and an unspecified amount of time Wednesday. When the glitch happened, Westbrook said a computerized system in Raleigh notified company officials. Workers switched the affected area to a new breaker until the original could be repaired.

Westbrook said Progress Energy will restore the breaker Wednesday. He said residents affected by any outages should call the company's toll-free number at (800) 452-2777.
