Ed and Rae Allen establish scholarship fund at MOC

MOUNT OLIVE -- Ed and Rae Allen of Goldsboro recently established the Rae Allen Endowed Scholarship Fund at Mount Olive College. The initial gift of $500, along with continued gifts from the Waylin and Wayne County AARP chapters, will help provide scholarships for future students at the college.
Founder of the Waylin AARP chapter, past president of the chapter in Wayne County and chapter specialist for District 13 of the state AARP organization, Allen is the owner of Ed Allen Advertising in Goldsboro. He and his wife are retired but remain active in the community.
The couple made the announcement of the scholarship recently on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary. Fellow members of the Goldsboro Host Lions Club, the AARP, and relatives were present during the celebration.
Allen said, "This scholarship fund is a memorial to the AARP where 'old folks are serving the youth'."
Greg Tanner, associate state director of N.C. for AARP said, "AARP was built on the motto 'to serve not to be served' and that is what I've seen Mr. Allen do and what I've witnessed others saying about him through his community service."
Dianne Riley, director of alumni relations at Mount Olive College, also spoke of her relationship with the couple in establishing an endowment for their son Keith several years ago. She praised both of them for their loving and caring attitude, especially in providing others with the opportunity to receive an education.
"With the AARP being started by retired teachers, it is very appropriate that Mr. Allen established a scholarship in the field of education," she said.
