Goldsboro High School valedictorian honored

Goldsboro High School valedictorian Ashelyn James has been recognized for her sportsmanship.
Miss James was named one of eight state winners of the N.C. High School Athletic Association's ejection free recognition. Students from all 331 public schools in the state were eligible in the selection process.
In making the announcement during Monday night's Board of Education meeting, board member Thelma Smith said the award recognized Miss James' "exemplary display of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity for her participation in basketball, volleyball and track during her four years of high school.
"The association selected her based upon her respect for the integrity and judgment of contest officials, acceptance of their decisions without gesture or argument, self-control under all conditions, respectful treatment of teammates and opponents, and role-model sportsmanship for her school and community."
In the spring, Miss James learned she was a candidate for the Morehead Scholarship to UNC-Chapel Hill and the Parks Scholarship to attend N.C. State University. She opted to accept the scholarship to UNC.
Mrs. Smith said that altogether, Miss James has been offered approximately $360,000 in academic scholarships. She received $500 from the athletic association, which she said has already been spent on school supplies.
"I don't know if there's ever been a student that has received as much or achieved as much as you, but I want you to know as a former counselor, I applaud you," Mrs. Smith said in making the presentation to Miss James. "They didn't just give it to you; you learned it. You have made Wayne County proud."
