No major fires in Goldsboro in June

The Goldsboro Fire Department did not respond to a major fire in June, and Chief Bobby Greenfield said it was the first time in almost three years no major fires were put out during a month.
The last month that the department did not answer a major structure fire was September 2002.
The department's clean record ran out quickly in July with two house fires.
Last month, the department did answer several smoke scares, false alarms and grass, vehicle and unattended cooking fires that resulted in minimal damage, Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Sasser wrote in the GFD monthly report. Fire and service calls totaled 168.
Department personnel also took part in 480 hours of company training and 1,867 hours of individual training in June.
Department training was conducted in the National Incident Management System, Wayne Memorial Hospital standpipe operations, foam fire streams, hazardous materials and methodology.
Company training was held in equipment operations, high-angle rescue, pump operations, pre-fire planning, aerial operations, snorkel skills, search and rescue, deck gun drills, self-contained breathing apparatus, friction loss, ropes and street skills.
The department took part in numerous fire prevention activities in June. The fire safety house was taken to Lowe's, Berkeley Mall and St. Mark Church of Christ so that children could learn fire safety. A fire truck was displayed at the Wayne Memorial Hospital health fair, Gold's Gym and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Students from D.S. Simmons Academy also toured the downtown headquarters station.
Routine maintenance of the five stations and equipment also was done during June.
